As industries evolve rapidly, employers’ expectations of blue-collar workers have changed significantly. Now more than ever, employers value employees with technical skills, strong interpersonal abilities and adaptability rather than physical strength alone. For young workers striving to meet these new expectations, developing essential skills is crucial. Here’s an outline of what matters and how to prepare.

Industries such as hospitality, retail, manufacturing and warehousing increasingly depend on workers who possess the technical knowledge necessary to operate machinery, utilise computers and adhere to safety protocols. Basic technical skills are essential for effective job performance. Young workers might consider engaging in vocational training programmes or on-the-job training offered by various companies. Gaining industry-specific knowledge of equipment and safety procedures can enhance job prospects and potentially lead to career advancement opportunities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has left an indelible mark on the Indian economy. India’s GDP declined by 7.3% during the 2020-2021 financial year. This sharp decline was not just a number on the balance sheet; it had a human face, especially for the millions of low-wage earners who lost their jobs.

The pandemic-induced slowdown severely impacted multiple sectors and various employers across industries. The employment situation during the first COVID-19-induced lockdown in April–June 2020 was dire, with a 20% unemployment rate and 9% employment with zero work hours, as reported by the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy (CMIE). This data underscores the vulnerability and hardships endured by blue-collar workers throughout the pandemic.

Sujay Pidara, Founder, MyJobee, said, "The initiatives announced in the budget for employment creation and skill development are crucial and beneficial. The focus on first-time employees with incentives for EPFO and substantial support for job creation will connect both skilled and unskilled workers with meaningful employment opportunities. Furthermore, the commitment to upskilling 20 lakh youth over five years through upgraded Industrial Training Institutes is a much-needed strategy. Such initiatives promise to not only boost economic growth but also ensure inclusive development by equipping youth with the necessary skills for a sustainable and self-sufficient future.”

While budget 2024 certainly emphasises job creation, the government has launched various initiatives to boost women's participation in the workforce. These efforts reflect a commitment to advancing women's roles in economic development. By establishing working women hostels in collaboration with industries, developing creches, and organising skill training programs for women, the government aims to foster women-led advancement.

In April 2023, with the COVID-19 pandemic ongoing, MyJobee was launched to tackle issues in the blue-collar job market. Seeing the struggles of migrant workers and the high demand for these jobs, the platform aimed to create a solution that connects employers and job seekers more effectively, making it simpler and fairer for everyone involved.

Inspiration and Inception:
The inspiration behind MyJobee stemmed from the hardships faced by migrant workers forced to return to their villages due to the pandemic. Recognizing the need for a reliable platform to reconnect them with employers upon their return to cities, MyJobee was created. The goal was clear: to provide a dedicated platform that not only matches job seekers with suitable employment opportunities but also ensures their trust and safety in the recruitment process.
